Disabled Access in LGBTQ Spaces

The LGBT Disabled Peoples Group meets monthly and welcomes all LGBT disabled people.

We have had great discussions about how accessible LGBT venues and support are for disabled people. We have also discussed how things can be better. Join us for a creative thinking session to develop top tips on accessibility for LGBT venues and groups- so that we can share our ideas with local groups. Please bring your ideas and we’ll bring the snacks!

I will bring flipcharts and pens and art stuff so that people can contribute to the discussion in a way that feels most comfortable to them.

Friday 23rd September| Stamner Room, Brighthelm | 3-5 pm

Please email meg.lewis@switchboard.org.uk for more details or to RSVP.

Whitehawk LGBTQ Meet-Up

The drop in group at the Whitehawk Inn is going well with more people attending and becoming interested in the group. We would still love more people to come along! Its primarily a social group, a space to chat and get to know other LGBT people over tea/cofee and those all important biscuits!

As more people attend we are beginning to shape the group, thinking about what people would like to do during the meet up, thinking about interesting speakers etc. So if you would like to be part of forming a great LGBT support group pop along to meet great people and have you say.

Wednesday 21st September| 1-3pm | The Whitehawk Inn

A Great Pride Bake-Off Thank-you

We would like to thank all the fantastic people in the Pensions Regulator’s staff LGBT+ network, who raised £572 for Switchboard by holding a Great Pride Bake-Off.

The Bake-Off was part of a week of activities organised by the LGBT+ network in the run up to Pride, which culminated in their participation in the Pride Parade. We are very grateful that they included community fundraising for us in such a packed programme. Thanks to everybody who organised and participated.

National Refugee Week

National Refugee Week runs from the 20th -26th June, and so we are taking this time to talk about LGBTQ refugees and asylum seekers.

LGBTQ refugees often face double marginalisation and challenges, by virtue of their refugee or asylum seeker status, and also due to their LGBTQ identity.

As LGBTQ people and communities, we know that sexual orientation and gender identity do not fit neatly into boxes and do not have checklists of attributes which can be assessed and judged. Each LGBTQ person is unique and does not have the same experiences or interests. However, a watchdog found that a tenth of Home Office interviews included intrusive questions about sexual practices and include questions based on outdated stereotypes of LGBTQ people.
