Bi Visibility Day

September the 23rd was Bi Visibility Day, and to mark the occasion we teamed up with Brighton Bothways and the LGBT Workers Forum for some fun social events. We also asked you to send us your top tips for how to be a Bi Ally.

A Fond Farewell to Dr Maria Antoniou

11219156_1000882556618228_851409511650968367_nAfter more than a year as the interim Director for LGBT Switchboard, Dr Maria Antoniou will be leaving the charity on the 10th of September, following a handover period with Switchboard Director Natalie Woods who has recently returned from maternity leave.
Maria has been involved with the charity for a number of years including holding the position of chair on the trustee board and has been a huge asset to the organisation. She has overseen some critical work and significant changes in the last 12 months that have benefited many in our LGBT community.

We would like to thank Maria for all of her hard work and wish her all the best for the future – she will be missed!

Support for LGBTQ Groups

pencilsLGBT HIP is developing work to support emerging LGBTQ groups to get off the ground and established LGBTQ groups to grow. As part of this we have some exciting new resources and workshops coming up.

For support with policy development, check out our brand new policy toolkit for top tips and templates of existing policies developed by LGBT groups.

The Breakfast Club

As a charity serving the LGBTQ community, we rely on corporate support to help run our services. The Breakfast Club are a recent addition to our corporate sponsors, and we’ve been grateful for their support to our Older LGBT project at their new cafe in Brighton. The staff we have had contact with have been genuinely inclusive and keen to establish the Brighton cafe as a meeting space for older LGBT people who often struggle to find welcoming spaces. The Breakfast Club told us on 24th June of their plans to purchase the former Black Cap in Camden and the opposition to this from LGBT protesters.  We of course recognise the value of the Black Cap as an LGBT community hub, and support the campaign for more LGBT community spaces. The Breakfast Club have assured us that they will do everything they can to ensure that the LGBT community is supported and included in their plans for the venue. Switchboard will also continue to work to create safe spaces for LGBT people in Brighton & Hove.

Second Older LGBT Housing Workshop

Following the success of "Inside Out", the Older LGBT Housing workshop in March, there will be another workshop in June, this time with lunch! The first event was a great day with lots of discussion with an interesting mix of people from the older LGBT community, private residential providers, local housing associations, and council run housing units. There were lots of important questions raised and lots of ideas shared. If you weren’t able come to the last time, you can come this time.

The workshop will be held on Thurs 4th June, 10.30 to 1.30 at Community Base. You can book a place by emailing helen.bashford@switchboard.org.uk . When booking, please state if you would like to stay for lunch and if you have any access needs.
